I copied our entire library catalog today, trying to create a hard copy back up to the internet stores. Now, I was aware that we by no means have an extensive offering, and we’re certainly no Library of Congress. We’re a small town with a miniscule budget and very little buying power, so we rely almost completely on the lack luster donations. Depressingly enough, I get excited when people die because it means their libraries generally get donated to ours. I went out and decided to make a few tiny purchases for this effort; I got a stack of blank CD’s, a CD labeler, CD labeling software, and disk printers.
This was practically the biggest splurge of my entire fiscal year in preparation for this project. I hired Jenna, the high school student who volunteers here, for the whole day to get this project done while I did regular work. It took her fifteen minutes. It took one CD, one label, and only one use of the software and printer. Now I know she’s a very talented young girl, but somehow I see it as less of a reflection on her and more a reflection on our dear little collection; that is how abysmally tiny our library is.
