My sister’s birthday is coming up, and I’m thinking about getting her some outdoor kitchen accessories. It used to be that barbecue accessories were the realm of the menfolk, but outdoor kitchens have advanced so much, they really are a home and decorator item in and of themselves.
As such, they need to have some taste applied in the choosing of accessories. I was thinking of visiting the cal flame or fire magic sites to see what the latest is in this stuff. I think that so far most of the choices are very practical rather than decorator, but just open up your imagination to the possibilities!
I was envisioning some beautiful, bright decorator mats, for instance. Or how about crockery that you can just leave outside that will resist the weather? Or a spice rack that does the same-how about one of those hanging pot rack things like you see over islands in gourmet kitchens? I mean, if they can put working sinks out there, how about outdoor tv’s and such? Or artwork. I think a great outdoor wall to wall rug is not out of the question, either. Talk about Great Indoors stores—they need decorator “great outdoors” stores, too!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackIf you know someone who likes grilling, I think those long-handled BBQ tools are a great gift. Throw in a cook’s apron, a chef’s hat and some hot mitts and you’ve got a really memorable gift.
An outdoor TV is a great idea since people do so much grilling outdoors during baseball season. If you have a TV near the grill, the chef doesn’t have to miss a minute of the big game.
Whatever crockery or cups you buy for your sister, it should be as tough as possible. Get stuff that’s made from hard-to-break tempered glass or high-impact plastic. Don’t buy anything made out of thin glass.
Another good gift for a BBQ chef is an awning or a big garden umbrella to keep the sun off when you’re cooking. It’s a thoughtful and practical gift.
One thing you can never have when you’re cooking outdoors is more counter space. Consider buying your sister some kind of rolling counter made out of metal so it will stand up to the elements.
I love to grill on my BBQ island. I’ve got all my cooking tools handy, including plenty of spices. When I’m BBQing, I favor using a dry rub and a vinegar-based basting sauce. That tastes more authentic to me than commercial BBQ sauces.
One of the best gifts you can give anybody who likes to grill at night is a clip-on light. It’s a real pain in the neck to have to cook one-handed because you’re holding a flashlight. Been there, done that.
To me, the best gift you can give a BBQ chef is a box of high-quality steaks. The real secret to successful grilling is using the best meat you can afford.
It’s a good idea to have a set of place mats dedicated to outdoor use, but you have to put them away after you use them. If you leave them outside all the time, the sun will soon fade the colors and they’ll look ugly.
