Though I don’t have a lot of commitments that prevent me from taking the holidays that I desire, this next year was going to be a little different.  I asked for some new tasks at work this past year, so now one of my roles is to man a trade show booth at college job fairs six times during the year.  On one hand it lets me go out an interact with other people outside of the office, on the other hand, working career fairs wasn’t really what I had in mind when I asked for other duties.

At least the job fairs are rather easy, and the hardest part is getting the pop up displays to work properly.  On the bright side of things, at least I don’t usually take my holidays during the months that the students are in college, so my job doesn’t really impair my ability to travel. 

Thank goodness.

Talk about frustrating.

So, I have decided that we should buy some larger flash memory cards for our cameras.  I know that the prices are less than half what they were when we bought them, so there is really no reason for not to buy bigger cards.  I was thinking about getting one that would do about five hundred pictures as that should be enough for a week long trip, right?

After shopping around for a memory stick pro duo for my Sony camera, I realized that I needed a completely different memory card for my wife’s Olympus camera.  For some reason the store I was at didn’t carry the xD cards that she needed, so I guess I will have to look elsewhere.

Hopefully the memory card that I bought today will be large enough for our next vacation – we are going to go cross country skiing through the mountains – it should be an amazing experience.

In fact, since we aren’t a big store, we have placed a huge emphasis on customer service.  We are there to help the customer with their needs, and we aim to please.

One of the biggest changes that we have made at our store is our acceptance of kids.  Many big-box retailers ignore kids altogether and they are missing something very important – those children will be their future customers.

So, if we have a client that visits the store and brings their children it is as much our duty to satisfy the adult’s needs as the child.  Even something as simple as showing a child our camera bags engages them and makes them feel important when they are at our store.  You see, by making our store a warm and welcome place for them as well, we are cultivating brand loyalty to our organization.

By following this mantra, we have seen a large growth in return customers and positive business growth even in this time of economic uncertainty.  It will be interesting to see the changes we will see in ten years from now, when most of these kids will be old enough to shop in our store.

How do you know which light bulbs you should buy? After all, there are so many different lighting options to choose from. You could get fluorescent light bulbs which might cost a bit out of pocket but are designed to last for a long time. You can try solar-powered light bulbs which vary in their effectiveness but definitely save a lot on energy. You can get high pressure sodium light bulbs which are an energy-efficient light option that is becoming increasingly common.

In order to determine which of these light bulbs to buy, you want to ask yourself what your goals are. Sure, you want to save money, but what are your other concerns? Do you want to be as green as possible? Do you want to make sure you get enough bright light in the office even after the change? Figure out what else you want beyond saving on electricity costs and you’ll be able to figure out which light bulbs are the best ones for you to choose.

Here are some do’s and don’ts for putting up holiday candles in the office:

- Do choose jar candles. You want to make sure that the wax and the flames of all candles are contained to prevent any type of fire hazard in the office. Jar candles are the safest candles for this.

- Don’t get scented candles. These are wonderful for the holidays but you don’t want to put them in common areas where people might have allergies to them. Putting a single one in your own office is fine.

- Do get candles with wintry themes or colors. You want to get candles that have Christmas spirit. You might not want to go so far as to get Christmas shapes though since there are probably people in the workplace who don’t celebrate Christmas.

- Don’t forget to put them out. Never assume that the last person in the office will blow out all of the candles. Make sure that you put them out before you leave the office even if you leave early one day.

- Don’t stop having candles in the office when the season is over. If you like the way it feels this week to have candles lit in the office then you’ll probably like it all year long!

One company that offers a great example of this is Kalco Lighting. This is a company that has been in business for approximately three decades. During that time, it has changed a lot. Over the years, Kalco Lighting went from being a plain old retailer to a really innovative merchant. The company started out simply importing ceiling fans from elsewhere and selling them for a profit. These days, however, the company is known for creating handcrafted light fixtures that are truly exquisite works of art.

This is just one company that serves as an example of how a business can become so much more than what it starts out as. Yes, you should have a vision for your business. Yes, you should set goals that put you on track for achieving that vision. However you should also remain open to the possibilities that evolve as your business grows over time. This is what true entrepreneurship is really all about!

Specifically, I am looking for the right point to sell the gold that I invested most of my retirement money in just six months ago.  Though some people thought it was a risky move, all the numbers suggested that it would go up, and as it turns out I was right.

But since we will be going away for a holiday shortly, I just don’t want to hold onto the gold anymore, and I will be selling the gold today.  That way, I can go on vacation without having the need to look at the price of gold throughout the day instead of sitting on the beach enjoying the sun.

I know that some of my friend suggested that I don’t sell everything, but deep down, I just don’t feel that leaving some in and being greedy is the right thing to do.  Sure, I could make a little more money, but at the same time I could lose more too.

Based on the sizable return that I have made, I am not too worried as to how much more I can make – what I have made so far will give me a nice retirement nest-egg.
