My father is a two-time organ transplant patient. After the first transplant, he began attending a support group for transplant patients. He’s been going to this group for over half a dozen years now. I often go with him to hear the lectures that teach people about the transplant process. The group is hosted by one of the local hospitals. That’s how I learned that there are a lot of free classes, workshops and lectures that you can attend at hospitals. It’s a great way to get an education about the health topics that might interest you.
Usually the lectures are given by professionals who are working in a specific field. For example, an audiologist might come in to give a lecture on the latest technology available for hearing aids. Sometimes the speaker is an administrator at the hospital who offers information about the programs and specialties of the institution. In other cases the instructor may be a med student intern who has to complete a public speaking event at the hospital in order to get credit for a class. No matter who teaches the class, there is almost always a Q&A at the end. This is when you can ask personal medical questions and get some great free advice. I definitely think it’s worth it to find out if a hospital near you offers something like this.
