I really feel sorry for people in any kind of sales job right now in this economy. I’ve always thought how really hard it must be to, say, work on commission and have to drum up business, especially by cold-calling. I know there are some great resources out there such as inside sales, but boy, it must be a scary time for salespeople right now.
It’s so hard to know even what to think that my sons should go into when they graduate from college. Are there industries out there that are relatively sheltered from recession? I’m in education and I know that we’re not: because a bond measure did not pass recently, many of our teachers are going to get laid off. And because the internet is becoming more and more the vehicle used to shop around, (practices like outsourcing insurance sales,) I imagine that it’s a lot harder to guarantee sales even in still-needed industries like the medical profession, cell phones or anything we still need but no longer have to rely on what’s located within our own town.
So what’s recession-proof? The funeral industry? Emergency services? TV? It’s really scary thinking now that my son wants to be an engineering major. They’re on the chopping block all the time!
