As a freelance writer, I think travel writing would be an interesting career, but I don’t know how feasible it would be.

As a travel writer, you would get to take a lot of interesting trips and earn money doing it. For instance, you could take a holiday in Lake Louise, Canada, and write about your experiences. You could also combine your experiences and lessons learned on ALL your trips, and write advice such as weighing the pros and cons of Canada tour packages or things to do on a Banff, Canada vacation.

A big advantage to being a travel writer, at least in my mind, is that you can deduct some of your travel expenses as business expenses. This might be really worthwhile if you plan on taking the trips anyway — just write an article or a review, and hey presto! a whole lot of your expenses just became deductible as the cost of doing business.

Unfortunately, the cost of going on vacation is usually much higher than the income you will earn for your articles, unless you intend to write several different articles for every single vacation. So unless you either find a publisher that will pay you extremely well, or one that will pay your expenses up front, you will probably need a source of income other than what you make as a travel writer.
