freelance writerI’ve been freelancing full-time for almost four years now, and there are so many things I really like about it. One of the things I like, though, is how environmentally friendly (and convenient!) my job is.

The first reason why is pretty obvious: I don’t have to commute to work, unless you consider walking from my bedroom into my office a commute! I have no clue how much pollution I save the world by not commuting, but I’m sure it’s a lot.

Another, perhaps less obvious reason why is how little paper I use — and how little trash I produce. Since I do practically everything online — even get paid online — I don’t generate much paperwork that isn’t already digitized.

I love this second part quite a bit, because I am kind of obsessive about keeping records of everything, and digitized paperwork makes it really easy to keep everything without feeling like a packrat. Think about it! Big companies pay lots of money for document management software solutions. Companies that can’t afford to digitize their paperwork in-house have to hire a document imaging service to do it for them. But because of the naturee and size of my business, my paperwork usually already comes that way.

Obviously there are a lot of things to love about freelancing — keeping my own hours, choosing who I work with, and so on.
